Our Story
Guadalajaraucd was founded in 2015 by Dr. Kwame Amoako, a Ghanaian economist who witnessed firsthand how lack of financial education was trapping many of his fellow citizens in cycles of debt. After returning from his studies abroad, Dr. Amoako was struck by the growing availability of credit options in Ghana, coupled with a concerning absence of educational resources about responsible borrowing.
What began as informal workshops in the Western Region quickly grew as the need for this education became increasingly apparent. In 2016, we secured our first grant from the Ghanaian Ministry of Finance to develop a structured curriculum focusing on credit management and debt avoidance strategies tailored to the local economic context.
The organization's unusual name comes from a fusion of "Guadalajara" – the Mexican city where Dr. Amoako attended an international financial literacy conference that inspired his vision – and "UCD" which stands for "Understanding Credit and Debt." This unique name has become synonymous with quality financial education throughout Ghana.
By 2018, our team had expanded to include educators, financial analysts, and community organizers. We opened our headquarters in Takoradi and began developing digital resources to extend our reach beyond in-person workshops. Today, Guadalajaraucd operates in six regions across Ghana, providing vital financial knowledge to communities ranging from urban professionals to rural farmers.
